Thanks Jan and Gale, there is indeed plenty of room for dialogue and your comments are cogent for at least many of us who are now on fixed incomes, starting to snap, crackle, and pop, as well as having an ailment or two.  So, having carefully read what folks are saying excites me-knowing that we have plenty of time to explore various plans and venues.  When will the reunion planning group be meeting to actually begin the planning process?  Could a survey be posted on site to ask for feedback to assist in steering which direction we may go?  I'll volunteer for anything including clean up, if fair lead time is given.

I didn't mean to scare everyone. I have dealt with the mental anguish that comes with the loss of a limb. I currently have a prosthetic leg and can stand and walk with the help of a walker. I hope to come to the reunion using a cane. Golf is still a little iffy. Thanks for everyone's thoughts and prayers. A special thanks to Nurse
Jan for your visits and my good friend Chris  Gill for finding me every time I've been moved

Is it just me pushing the wrong key or do others have problems with the print going real small on here.  Might be my WIFI connection too.

I agree with Gale Cady (Williams). Just a nice place to relax, visit, enjoy a moderately priced dinner for at least one night. Schedule the golf outing and other activities for those who wish to participate at another time. Money, illnesses and other problems often dictate whether someone can attend. Looking forward to our 50th.

Jan, Gale, everyone:

Jan, thanks for the compliment, appreciate it. Gale, I agree completely with you on what we really need. Not that much. A couple of messages ago my real motivation in writing was putting out there the idea of a tour of the redone NHS. About how long ago was it refurbished? I missed the reunion 4 years ago, did I miss a tour? Steve, hang in there, buddy. I have faith you'll be doing better. Roy, consider going to the reunion. Try it, you'll like it!    Oh, yeah -  Carolyn, my wife, Philo H.S. class of '66, 165 in the class, percentage-wise  has lost more people than we have, even accounting they are 2 years ahead of us. Here ends the trivia of the day!

Dave, I think a tour of the high school is a great idea. It was mostly finished by May of 2013, because that's when our daughter graduated - they have since finessed things a bit and planted grass and a few trees. It's very different from the buildings we knew, especially in the lack of trees and grass. However, no one gets wet or cold now between classes, and this building is air conditioned, which is a huge plus.

If you look at a birds' eye view of it on Google Earth, you'll see that the building sprawls in several directions, like a lobster, and all of them have two stories, connected by long hallways.

There are elevators now, too, to provide access for handicapped students or to transport things.

I have zero  knowledge of how to schedule a tour, but I do know the person whom we would contact for that: Seth Roy, who is the PR contact for the school district, and a former education reporter at The Advocate. He is a great young man who has provided the district with amazing resources to make communications far better between students and teachers and parents and the community. A big win.

A further thought on the get-together: I do think that a lot of activities and expense is a thing that has kept many members of our class away. Lots of us - me at the top of that list, most likely - do not like parties or dances or high-octane social situations. A low-key event will be far more attractive to lots of people. My idea of a perfect reunion would be about 7 hours (5 to midnight?) of mostly unplanned time where people can sit wherever they like and just talk. The less fuss, the better. Very casual.

OK, this has nothing to do with the 50th reunion, but I have been an avid CUBS fan for over 35 of those 50 years, since high school. So, on the day of the first WS game against the Wahoo Warriors, I have to say,"GO, CUBS, GO!!!!"

I usually "lerk", but I support Gale's ideas on cost, and what is needed. Last time I opted to just go to Damon's which is no longer there under that name and visited some.  I did tour the new high school and was  impressed with the remodel.

I have eaten at the "new" Trout Club and was not impressed with either the food or the cost.  Personally I don't think it is a good fit especially if we just want to visit.

I think just asking for donations to A Call for College is enough.  People will give what they can afford, but setting a goal of hopefully at least $5,000 is worthy.  Actually I have found that setting the goal is more important that asking for a set amount from each.

Thanks to those persons responsible for setting up and planning events and maintaining the website.

And John.....this has nothing to do with the 50th reunion....I have been an Indians fan for about the same amount of time you have been a Cubs fan.  Always hoping we would get to the World Series and here we are playing the Cubs...... Go Tribe :)

When I first mentioned a dollar amount for any "A Call to College" contributions, I did not presume that $50 or $100 might be construed as some sort of mandated obligation; and I regret that it seems to have been interpreted that way.  Much better to get a maximum number of us to participate in any way that fosters a team effort.  We're in this as the Class of '68:  We would be prouder of 100 contributing $10 than 10 contributing $100. Who contributed what is something none of us needs to know. So I fully support Kris's suggestion to set a realistic overall goal.

I second that. My income is quite limited now, so my abilty to give isn't as big as my desire to.

In about twenty words, you absolutely nailed it, and summed up my life, too.

Malcolm,

Succinct and accurate. Let's keep it short, and let's keep it cheap. yes (and let's hope we're all still around then!)

Classmates it has been nearly 50 years since I was in Newark.I now live north of Seattle,Washington.Your many plans and ideas for the reunion are great. But consider many of us may have to travel long distances and find accomodations to attend.Additionally some of us are not in the best of health.I hope to attend so keep making plans Thanks, Pat Axline

Hello all,

I'm still  alive and it's so good to see so many of my old friends are still around as well. Planning for an upcoming retirement day so I may have  some more time on my hands that would allow me to visit here more often. Look forward to hearing more about the 50th. Just might make an appearance after 30 years.

Take care!

How About a Shout-Out for the Class of 68!  The Newark High School Athletic Hall of Fame will be inducting another alumnus from our great class of 68 in February of 2017.  It is Cary Mitchell and he is the 4th member of our class to be honored.  As the famed local sportscaster Jimmy Crum of Channel 4 used to say, How about the sports fans!  Cary will be joining fellow 68er's Tom Jefferson, Charlie Snow, and Tony Campolo in the Hall.  By the way, my husband John who is former teacher and coach with the Newark City School District for over 30 years and also a 1970 Newark High graduate, nominated Cary and also Charlie Snow.  Our class now has four inductees and is the only one with four besides the class 70.  Not to take anything away from the 1970 class but two of its members are honoary whereas our class has no honorary members (they are full-fledged members and were outstandiing athletes).  By the way, my hubby also nominated John Snow and Denny Odle from the 70 class.  In addition, the class of 1967 has three outstanding athletes who are inductees- Ray Hupp, Mike Foote and Mike Hannah (my hubby also nominated Mike Hannah).  Way to go Cary and Congrats!

Barb, you are so right-on! It's too bad that our school (like everywhere else in America) did not have official sports for girls, because you and Peg would certainly have been on those teams!

Peggy Gartner (Dunlap)

Thank you Gale.  There were many good lady athletes in the Great Class of 1968.  Thank goodness for intramurals. :)

I am thankful things have changed and thankful for all of the school's competitive girl teams they have now!  I have four granddaughters who play sports and they are all pretty good.  I am thankful they are able to participate and who knows....someday maybe they will be in the Hall Of Fame.
