Richard L. Dowell, Jr.

November 23, 1949 - April 4, 2016

Richard L. “Rick” Dowell, Jr., age 66, of Newark, passed away on Monday, April 4, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born November 23, 1949 in Newark, Ohio to the late Richard L. and Cleona (Burns) Dowell, Sr.

Richard was a dedicated and caring foster parent in Licking County for over twenty years fostering 122 children. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and collecting guns. For those who knew him well will surely miss his good sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Nina I. (Cook) Dowell; a son, Richard Lee Dowell, III of Newark; six daughters, Heather I. (Brett Gilbert) Dowell, her children Ravyn, Mummey and Keegan; and stepchild, Corey Gilbert; Jasmine Dowell, Autumn Dowell, Mariah Dowell, Harlie Dowell and Ashlynn Dowell all of Newark; three brothers, Vernon Hickman, Vincent “Duke” Hickman and David Dowell; three sisters, Shay Clark, Connie King and Beverly Vermillion.

Rick leaves behind many strong attachments with the children whom he built a father like bond over the years. He viewed these children as his own and he will be greatly missed by Danny (Madison) Dennis and their children, Aaron Dennis, Austin Dennis and Harrison Dennis; Tashala Gregory and her children, Natasha Schooler, Samantha Schooler and Issac Shooler; Megan Metcalf; Rick (Ashley) Turner and their children, Angelo Turner and Avin Turner; J.T. (Kayla) Turner and their children, Kikka Turner and Dottie Turner; and Dillon Salter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Carol and Vicki.
No calling hours or services will be observed. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
