Diana Holmes (Brown)

Our next meeting for the class reunion is Tuesday, August 29 @ 5:30PM @ the FOP. PLEASE TRY TO SPREAD THE WORD.  A lot of people are not on Facebook or have not joined our website. We don't have email addresses and, even if we had mailing addresses, it gets very expensive to mail invitations. We only have our two online sites and word of mouth. Help us by going to the classmate profiles on our website and send a private message to any classmate that you know and ask them if they are going to attend.  If you are friends with any of them on Facebook, please send them a message.  If you have a phone number, call them. If you see them out and about, mention the reunion.  We would love to see more reservations come in. How often do you get to go to a class reunion for $10.  We are up to about 50 reservations now. Hoping to see more of you there. All of the details for the reunion are in my post on our website www.newarkclassof1968.com dated August 2 in the message forum and on out Facebook page NHS High School Class of 1968 with the same date.

Just received word from Dave Froberg that John Babcock and George Goumas have passed away in the past few days.  May they rest in peace.  If you have obituaries for them, please let me know so I can post them on this website.

George A. Goumas, 73 of Newark passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones after a several year, hard-fought battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

George was well known in the community as the “Candyman” and worked hard for 45+ years to continue the legacy that his grandfather started in 1911 at The Original Goumas Candyland, that he now leaves in the capable hands of his two daughters that he was so very proud of.

He enjoyed traveling the world, boating, fishing, eating a great Greek meal and watching his grandchildren play their sports. He was incredibly proud of each of them and enjoyed visiting with them often. George also loved and cared for his treasured dogs Chloe and Shadow. He was a life-long member of The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral.

He is survived by his beloved and dedicated wife, Marilyn; his two daughters, Patty Goumas-Durbin (John) and Keely Goumas-Perry (Tony); four adored grandchildren, Max and Alexis Durbin; Olivia and Ella Perry. He is also survived by three siblings, Soc Goumas, Greg Goumas and Viann Yankulov.

George is preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Bessie Goumas.

Calling hours will be held Sunday August 27th from 1pm. to 3pm at the Newark Chapel of Vensil and Chute Funeral Home, 1850 W. Main Street.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in George’s name to Hospice of Central Ohio, Attn: Philanthropic Development, 2269 Cherry Valley Road, SE, Newark, OH 43055.

This is very sad news! I very recently had a nice conversation with John here on this forum. He was always such a nice, easy-going guy. I've been searching for his obituary online but haven't found it so far. Rest in peace, John. You were such a good guy.

[does anyone know if he still lived in Las Vegas?]

If anyone has an obituary or date of passing for Stephanie Morrow, please let me know. I want to include her in our memory board. Also, if you know of anyone else who is not listed, please let me know as soon as possible. We don't want to forget any of our fellow classmates.

We need obituaries or dates of passing for James Decker and Karen Hurst.  If Karen was married, we could use her last name. The state they were living in at time of passing might also help in finding information.

Marian Williams (Spivey) let us know that Stephanie Morrow passed away in May of 2003.  Thanks to all who are trying to get information to us to let us know who have passed away so that they are not forgotten.  Rest in peace, Stephanie.

Great 55th reunion. Thanks to all who organized the event. As we get older there are fewer and fewer. It was great to connect with those who were there

I, too, am very sorry to hear of his passing. I have fond memories of playing "fish" (the card game) in Diane Derexson's kitchen, with Diane, Les and Steve Priest, they were all cousins.  I didn't know Les or Steve well and I was very shy, but they were great in making me comfortable and we had a fun time and laughed a lot.  I think this was in elementary school.

It seems we are losing too many of us too quickly.
