For various reasons I have not been on the message forum much. Though it would be nice to be on the zoom meeting tomorrow, I will not be able to actually make the event on Sept 16th as Barbara (Pricer NHS '69) and I along with Doug Pricer (NHS '74 I think) will be deep oin the Highlands of Scotland on our 3 week exploring of the country. Happy to be involved at some level though far away here in Reno. Charles Price

SAVE THE DATE!!!!!!!!!. 55TH CLASS REUNION. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 @ FOP LODGE, 255 S. 6TH ST. IN NEWARK.

Cost to attend is $10.00/person, which will include one free drink. There will be a bar provided by the FOP.  Any additional drinks will be at the attendees' expense.  The plan is to open the doors @ 5PM and meal service to begin at 6PM.  If you don't wish to attend and participate in the taco party, classmates and guest may enter after 8PM, but there will be a $25.00/person cash fee at the door and will not include a free drink ticket.  Reservations will need to be received by Thursday, August 31.  Checks only will be accepted.  No Paypal, Venmo, etc.  Reservations to be sent to Linda Brucker, 246 Sherwood Dr. N, Newark, OH 43055. Make checks payable to NHS Class of 1968.  Attendance will be limited to 1968 classmates and guests. Please make reservations as we will need to provide headcount to the catering service.

If you know of any classmates who are not on Facebook or have not joined our website, please spread the word to them to join and encourage them to attend.

We still could use assistance with preparing for the reunion.  We know it was a late notice about attending a Zoom meeting the last time.  If anyone is still interested, please contact Kathey (Applegate) Danner or myself.  This can be done on the website (www.newarkclassof1968.com) or Facebook page (Newark High School Class of 1968). Would probably be best to send a private message on the website.  Kathy will need your email address so that she can invite you to attend.  You will, then, receive an email with instructions on how to sign into the Zoom meeting.  Our next meeting is Wednesday, July 19, @ 5:30PM.  She will need your information by Monday, July 17.

Also, we are going to be accepting donations for making a 1968 class memorial to NHS. If you can't make it to the reunion, think about donating anyway.  If you wish to donate, you can send a separate check (specify on the memo line NHS gift donation) to Linda Brucker using the same information provided above, or you can include it with your reservation (specify on the memo line how much is for the gift).  Additionally, there will be a donation jar at the reunion.

If you would like to help in decorating, please join us Friday afternoon at the FOP.  We will let you know a time at a later date.

We are hoping to see a lot of our fellow classmates attend.  Looking forward to seeing many of you there.

I have a special request. If you know of any classmate who has passed away and is not on the "In Memory" page on our website (whether they graduated with us or maybe left during any high school year) please let me know as soon as you can.  I am working on a display for these classmates for the reunion. I have pictures for all, except three, which I am working on. I am, also, thinking that they may not be in our yearbook. if they attended the vocational school, I'm not sure if they did that all those years ago. You can send me a private message on our website or you can post on our Facebook page.

Just a note: During springtime our senior year, Greg became interested in soccer during our gym class. Afterwards, he was a starting soccer goalie, first for the Ohio University @ Zanesville team and then for the OSU team, long before soccer became popular. After graduating from OSU, he was soccer coach in northern Ohio at Lakewood H.S. I lost contact with him after he moved out of state.

Thank you, Diana, for finding the obituary about Greg.  We certainly don't want to forget any of our classmates who have passed away.  I'm sorry it took 15 years to discover Greg's obituary.  May he rest in peace.

I remember Greg. I took over his paper route and delivered The Newark Advocate a couple of times. Those were the days when you went door-to-door to collect. I also used to help Bill deliver The Sunday Columbus Dispatch.

Greg was a hurdler on the track team if I recall correctly.

Our next reunion committee meeting is Tuesday, August 15 @ 5:30PM @ the FOP Lodge, 255 S. 6th St. in Newark.

if you have suggestions for a class donation to NHS, let us know. Kathy Applegate Danner and Linds Miller Brucker will, also, be contacting the principal for any thoughts that the school might like us to do. We are thinking about a granite bench or a metal bench with a dedication "IN FOND MEMORY OF OUR CLASSMATES" "NHS CLASS OF 1968".  Nothing has been definitely decided yet. A lot will be determined by the amount of donations. If you would like to donate, send a check made out to NHS Class of 1968 to Linda Brucker @ 246 Sherwood Dr. N., Newark, OH 43055.  Please note in the memo that it is for the class donation..

Also, don't forget to send in your reservations before August 31 ($10/person if you will be dining with us and $25/person if you won't be dining with us. You won't be able to get in until after 8PM, though.) The dinner reservations will include one free drink ticket/person. Planning on opening the doors at 5PM and to start serving @ 6PM.  There will be snacks provided by the reunion committee after dinner or maybe even before. Make checks out to NHS Class of 1968 and send to Linda at the address above.  If you include a class donation with your reservation, please note on the memo line how much is for the donation.

If you have contact information for any classmates who are not on Facebook or have not joined our website, please let them know about the reunion and ask them to join either or both of these. The class website is www.newarkclassof1968.com. The Facebook page is Newark High School Class of 1968.

We hope to see many of you there. We haven't received a lot of reservations yet and we need to get a count of attendees for the caterer..

For those of us who may be interested and remember Ray Hupp (Class of '67) and his wife Sue Owen (our '68 classmate), Ray was inducted into the OSU Hall of Fame in 2018. Ray was a most incredible athlete. (I remember him striking me out in Little League baseball, while I stood frozen in fear of his fastball.) I think Ray and Sue may now live in Florida.

@BillOrsborn,

Bill,

It was great seeing you at the 50th Reunion. Ray lived on Moull Street and I knew him pretty well. He struck out 18 batters against E.T. Rugg. But I knew he wouldn't try to hurt me. So I punched two hits to right field. He got a 2-hitter that day.

Is anyone else haveing trouble booking a hotel for the reunion? Apparently there are several things happening in the area. Diane, have you contacted the local hotels to block rooms? Please let us know.

Diana Holmes (Brown)

No we didn’t. We were aware of things going on, but it was decided to hold it on Sept. 16.
The only hotels sold out at that time were Doubletree and Hampton Inn. The others I checked were Best Western Lakewood Inn (in Hebron), Cherry Valley Lodge, Comfort Inn, Courtyard by Marriott, and Holiday Inn Express. As of August 8, I was still seeing rooms available at Best Western Lakewood Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Cherry Valley Lodge and Comfort Inn.

Please send in your reservations for the class reunion. We need to have a count by August 31. At this time, we only have 35 reservations.  I have sent messages to classmates that I am friends with on Facebook and have asked if they are attending.   Their responses are none at all, they're thinking about it or haven't decided yet. It's only 5 weeks away and we would like to see all of you, but I know that's not possible. If your live away from Newark, I am still seeing rooms available at the hotels listed in my earlier post. If all else fails, I have seen some cheaper rates in New Albany, which Is only a 20-25 minute drive. Think hard about it and join us.  We want to see you.

Hello, Diane and all - my husband Joe and I will be there. Thank you for doing this work for us! Do we send our checks to this address? Just confirming! Linda Brucker @ 246 Sherwood Dr. N., Newark, OH 43055.

Also just to spread awareness, the Susie Q group (aka Susan Gualtieri) is hosting a multi-year reunion Saturday, Sept. 23 in Newark. Link on her Facebook page, which her daughter is now administering since Susie passed away in May. https://www.facebook.com/newark.high.75

Thank you!

Our next meeting for the class reunion is Tuesday, August 29 @ 5:30PM @ the FOP. PLEASE TRY TO SPREAD THE WORD.  A lot of people are not on Facebook or have not joined our website. We don't have email addresses and, even if we had mailing addresses, it gets very expensive to mail invitations. We only have our two online sites and word of mouth. Help us by going to the classmate profiles on our website and send a private message to any classmate that you know and ask them if they are going to attend.  If you are friends with any of them on Facebook, please send them a message.  If you have a phone number, call them. If you see them out and about, mention the reunion.  We would love to see more reservations come in. How often do you get to go to a class reunion for $10.  We are up to about 50 reservations now. Hoping to see more of you there. All of the details for the reunion are in my post on our website www.newarkclassof1968.com dated August 2 in the message forum and on out Facebook page NHS High School Class of 1968 with the same date.

George A. Goumas, 73 of Newark passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones after a several year, hard-fought battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

George was well known in the community as the “Candyman” and worked hard for 45+ years to continue the legacy that his grandfather started in 1911 at The Original Goumas Candyland, that he now leaves in the capable hands of his two daughters that he was so very proud of.

He enjoyed traveling the world, boating, fishing, eating a great Greek meal and watching his grandchildren play their sports. He was incredibly proud of each of them and enjoyed visiting with them often. George also loved and cared for his treasured dogs Chloe and Shadow. He was a life-long member of The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral.

He is survived by his beloved and dedicated wife, Marilyn; his two daughters, Patty Goumas-Durbin (John) and Keely Goumas-Perry (Tony); four adored grandchildren, Max and Alexis Durbin; Olivia and Ella Perry. He is also survived by three siblings, Soc Goumas, Greg Goumas and Viann Yankulov.

George is preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Bessie Goumas.

Calling hours will be held Sunday August 27th from 1pm. to 3pm at the Newark Chapel of Vensil and Chute Funeral Home, 1850 W. Main Street.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in George’s name to Hospice of Central Ohio, Attn: Philanthropic Development, 2269 Cherry Valley Road, SE, Newark, OH 43055.
